“You can find magic wherever you look. Sit back and relax all you need is a book!”
-- Dr. Seuss
Reading is Fundamental. In fact, it is one of the most important ingredients to becoming all that you can be. Reading develops the brain, provides a window into the world around you and far beyond and helps you do better in all school subjects.
Friday 29th March, we have celebrated ‘Book Day’. Both teachers and children had the opportunity to dress up as their favourite character from a book – thank you for taking the time in preparing these…everyone that took part looked fantastic!
Throughout this week all children have had a dedicated time in the library to read, explore new books and to change their English reading book. During the children’s English lesson that day they have focused on a book related activity:
Year 1A and B read the story of the ‘Gingerbread Man’ and designed their own Gingerbread man, using adjectives to describe the children’s different creations! Year 2A, B and C have investigated David Shannon’s story ‘A Bad Case of Stripes’ and have created their own character to include. Year 2I have examined the book ‘Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus’ written by Mo Willems and then designed an alternative title for the book and written different activities that the pigeon can do, convincing the reader to let the bird do it.
Year 3A and B have studied the story ‘Stone Soup’ written by Robert Moser and written instructions to create their own soup recipes. Year 3I did a book study on Roald Dahl’s ‘George’s Marvellous Medicine’. The children focused on instructional writing to create and write their own potions. Year 4, 5A and I the children have had the opportunity to choose their own English story to examine and then have then made a character paper mask and used adjectives to describes their chosen character’s features.
That afternoon the whole school took part in a paired reading session, reading an English book to another child within school.
During Chinese lessons, the children focused on a traditional Chinese story. It is important for the children to read in both languages and we actively promote this in school.
During assembly Mr Hurst did an interactive story with all the children. We had some Year 2 children sharing their own story books that they made during art and read it to the rest of the school. Mr Hurst also announced the winners of our ‘House Extreme Reading competition’, which will be displayed at the front reception and in the library – it was fabulous to see all the wacky and creative places where some of the photographs were taken!!
It has been a fun day for all and hopefully the magic of reading will continue with all of our children.
Just remember…
“The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more you learn, the more places you’ll go.”
-- Dr. Seuss, “I Can Read With My Eyes Shut!”.
