On Friday 31st March we welcomed all children into school to compete in our Annual Sports Day. Year 5-9 children took part in the morning and Years 1-4 competed in the afternoon. We welcomed our parents into school to cheer on the children from the side lines and from the new walk way, so they could get closer to the action!
Enrichment is one of four journeys of our school's education philosophy. We always attach great importance to sports and the children’s physical fitness. Sports and outdoor activities can not only enhance physical fitness, but also cultivate some fantastic attitudes to lifelong learning, for example, teamwork, effect communication, bravery, positivity and prosperity. When children participate in sporting events they are faced with challenges and difficulties and must show resilience during these times and overcome these. This builds strength of character and allows them to develop key emotional intelligences such as self-esteem and self-confidence – further developing a positive and optimistic attitude towards life, all of these aspects are becoming increasingly important in the modern world.
Our Sports Day is underpinned by our School Houses and all children compete together within their Houses: Hever, Leeds, Rochester and Bodiam, which are named after Castles in Kent and also used in Sutton Valance School in the UK. Each child is encouraged to take part in the competition and win points for their respective house team. In participating in such an event, they develop their team work ethos, develop sportsmanship, learn from others and enjoy in the sporting spirit that this event offers. This also links to our school ‘Four Journeys’ of ‘Community’ and ‘Leadership and Service’, thus creating a sense of community spirit and working co-operatively together to earn points for their respective Houses and to ultimately lift the Sport Day Trophy.
We were thrilled to welcome our Year 1 students, for them this is their first official whole school House event and it was evident that the children enjoyed themselves, as they took p art with much gusto!
A wonderful activity for all those who participated and for our parents who competed in our annual Parents Tug of War event. Congratulations to Rochester! Rochester won the first place in both Y1-4 and Y5-9 Sports Day! We look forward to next year and more record-breaking results!
