Amid the cheers, HIKSVS Cross Country Orienteering was successfully held on Sunday. Orienteering is a new form of field activity that originated in Europe. In the activity, the athletes visit the various points indicated on the map and try their best to reach all points and the finish line in the shortest time. Around the world, more and more people participate in and love this activity. It is not only an outdoor leisure, but also a competitive sport which is physically and mentally demanding. HIKSVS Orienteering continues the tradition of Sutton Valence School (UK) and aims to enrich the Four Journeys of our HIKSVS students.
In HIKSVS, sport is as important as academic field. Students at Eton College, one of Britain's top private schools, chant the slogan "Sport first, learn second" every day. It is not difficult to see that sports are one of the compulsory courses on the way of studying. During the Orienteering, HIKSVS' students were in high spirits when doing activities at each position along the route. The parents were pleased to witness the perseverance shown by the children during the activity. At the same time, students who are new to the house felt a sense of belonging. Here, students care about each other, take responsibility for each other, discover their talents and develop their skills.
HIKSVS has been committed to apply the ethos of "Holistic Education" into all aspects of the student's journeys in the school. HIKSVS unswervingly believes that good physical education can promote the development of students' brains, improve their responsiveness and resistance, and develop their sense of fair play and cooperation. When doing sports, students can learn how to face success and failure and how to succeed through individual and team efforts.
Orienteering is a very healthy intelligent sport valuing both mental and physical strength. This orienteering activity helped HIKSVS students develop abilities to independently solve problems and think logically. It was also a special parent-child sports program, in which parents participated to provide guidance to students when they faced challenges at different positions.
Moreover, it reflected the ethos of HIKSVS Four Journeys aiming to enhance students' overall competitiveness by enabling them to realise their full potential and add value to their lives, helping them find interests, and allowing them to develop in the journeys of academic, enrichment, leadership and service, and community.
