Last week saw 2 of the 4 school’s journeys (Leadership and Community) emphasised and celebrated. As part of the Year 4 Leadership programme boys and girls prepared speeches in support of their nominated charity. The range of charities proved extensive ranging from support for planting more trees to reduce pollution to helping the local Children’s Hospital. Through a process of year four voting for their peers, 3 finalists made presentations to the whole school about their charity. When all the votes were added the school voted to help a Rural Children’s Education Charity, their aim is to help children in rural areas receive a better education in terms of facilities and resources. Their web-site indicates that 1000RMB educates one primary school child for a year.
A number of activities were planned including the whole community opting to wear home clothes for the day, making a contribution to the charity for the privilege. The children donated toys and books which were sold to other students during morning and lunch break, whilst after school parents took part in on auction of a number of different items including tea for two at a Tianjin hotel, bottles of wine and specialist Chinese teas.
When all the donations had been counted our community had raised over 12000 RMB (approx.1300 GBP) to aid the work of a childrens’ rural education charity. Thank you to everyone who supported our day, we had fun whilst raising money to help children who are less fortunate than ourselves.
