On Thursday 15th June we welcomed a number of children to the stage to present a place in the world that they have visited or would like to visit and key facts about the place, in English. Children presented different countries from all around the world, from UK, America to more detailed places in China.
Public speaking is extremely beneficial for children, as it boosts their confidence, helps improve their communication skills and is an important skill that can be used throughout their lives. We want to foster this skill from a young age to ensure this essential life skill is embedded into practice from a young age and empowers them to face any situation they encounter in life. A self-assured child who can effectively address their fellow peers or an audience is likely to be seen in a more positive light by their peers and develop a stronger sense of self.
The judging panel consisted of Mr Hurst (Executive Principal), Miss Lumsden (International Principal), Miss Karch (Drama Teacher) and Mr Mullin (HIK International Principal). The children were judged against a number of different criterions, ranging from presence on stage, eye contact, content of speech, speaking with clarity, confidence and at an adequate speed.
The competition was divided into two groups:Years 1–4 and Years 5–8.
We were very proud of our children’s abilities and found speeches interesting, engaging and very formative. We will run this competition next year, but change the focus of the speech. Very well done to all our participants.
