On Monday 5th June World Environmental Day was celebrated around the globe. Agencies from schools, industries, communities, and governments of nations considered what impact they could make on improving our current environmental problems worldwide.
Without doubt the impact of climate change and the necessity to change our habits in terms of energy usage has been a prime focus in recent years. We must all carefully consider our use of the earth’s resources if we are to preserve our planet to remain a beautiful place for generations of life to come.
Allowing our children to experience this first hand allows them to develop their thoughts and opinions. It’s imperative in terms of their personal beliefs and values that are emerging and becoming embedded in their minds. To become a responsible, caring and giving global citizen and guardian of our world.
This year, in science lessons we asked children to consider what is happening with our planet and we can all play a small part which accumulates into real and sustainable change, developing habits that will stay with them though their lives. We asked them to take part in our project of recycling an old item and make it into something useful, thus reducing waste and the energy required to process it. Reducing waste impacts positively on lowering emissions of methane gas which is responsible in part for global warming.
The children brought in their work on Friday 9th June and the effort was amazing. We were all taken back by the creative thinking of students and their parents. There was a huge variety of new useful items from artwork, toys, appliances, tools – the diversity was impressive and we all felt a huge pride in their efforts. The work will remain on display in school over the next week. Artefacts from Steven 8A, Tobi 2CI and Alisa 2A were chosen in a vote by all students as the ones they liked the best. All our students who took part received points for their house team.
